My Journey Back to Skippack

Skippack is a township in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, located about 30 miles Northwest of Philadelphia. It is about 14 square miles in total area and home to about 14,400 people, according to the U.S. Census.

If you google our unique name “Skippack,” you will most likely first find information about Skippack Village, a spacious shopping, restaurant, and entertainment enclave centered along a main street, PA Route 73, offering diverse architecture, delicious meals, live music, a community theater, and quaint shops with purchasable treasures of all kinds. Here you’ll also find a beautiful brick European-style hotel and a covered bridge that crosses over Skippack Creek which gently flows behind a row of shops and restaurants.

Most commercial establishments are individually owned and many are unique to the village. There are no corporately owned chain stores or restaurants. This makes the experience of shopping and dining more intimate than one is apt to find at a typical suburban shopping mall. Skippack Village is also the site of many wonderful public events, such as our awesome Fourth of July parade and an annual craft fair called Skippack days.

Beyond the village, Skippack Township has other worlds to explore. As one example, just across the street from where I live is a restored stone farmhouse from the 18th century next to a magnificent red barn, all maintained by the Skippack Historical Society. There are also many great parks, public trails for hiking and biking, beautiful streets, and great people. Some wonderful shops and restaurants as well as businesses of all kinds thrive in the township, outside the village. I who call myself the Skippack Blogger, have yet to explore many of these places yet.

Why this journey

This blog, which you are reading now—and I am grateful if you are still reading—is my journey back to Skippack. What do I need to take this journey? After all, I already live here. In fact, I’ve lived here for sixteen years.

Back in 2010, I started a blog called I Love Skippack and continued it for seven years before other priorities (something called a j-o-b) took over. Now I am retired from the corporate world and starting my blog back up again; time for some labor of love.

It is human nature to take the familiar for granted. We travel to exotic locations to seek memorable and meaningful experiences, gaping at what’s new, but often neglecting the happiness available in our own backyard. I am searching for the happiness in my own backyard.

My blog is meant to provide you with useful information on what’s going on in Skippack. It’s also intended to support local businesses, organizations, individuals, and events. Finally, it’s meant to help both writer and reader focus on the positive things going on in ordinary, everyday life, centering on one example of an American small town.

No agenda,
I promise
Nothing to sell
I swear;
A town called Skippack
